Want to get a preview of the Sunday readings and hear inspirational music before Mass? Tune into Roanoke's WVTF’s (89.3 FM)’Sing for Joy’ broadcast at 7:00 AM each Sunday. ‘Sing for Joy’ is a program of sacred music which expresses the themes present in the readings which are the basis for Christian worship throughout the liturgical year.

This broadcast is also available online at: www.singforjoy.org/listeners/index.html at anytime.

Music Calendar:

Except during the summer the 9:00 choir rehearses Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 and the 11:30 choir rehearses on Sunday mornings from 10:00-11:15.

Our 'Resurrection Choir' meets 30 minutes before funeral liturgies. This choir helps lead the assembly in the familiar music selected by the family of the deceased. Most funerals take place during weekday mornings or early afternoons. However, it is also not uncommon to have a funeral on a Saturday. One need not be able to attend every funeral to be part of the Resurrection choir. If you would like to sing with the Resurrection Choir phone Mary Kennedy at 977-4244 or e-mail: Kennedy388@aol.com. Singers will be notified once a funeral liturgy has been scheduled at St. Andrews.

The Saint Andrew’s Organ:

The original St. Andrew’s Organ was a modest tracker (mechanical) instrument of fourteen ranks of pipes built and installed in 1907 by the M.P. Moller Company of Hagerstown, Maryland. In 1954, the same company electrified the instrument, disconnected the few façade (display) pipes that previously spoke with the rest of the organ, and provided the moveable console still in use today. In 1977, The W. Zimmer & Sons company of Charlotte, North Carolina removed all but four ranks (213 original pipes) in the organ and replaced them with pipes that largely give the organ the tonal character it has today. Additional work has been done on the instrument since 1977 and most recently (August 2003) the organ has been releathered. The specification of the present organ is found here:

Pedal:

Bourdon 16', 8', 4' (56 pipes)
Reed 16' (12 pipes)

Great:

Principal 8', 4', 2', (73 pipes. Last 12 notes of the 2' stop are notes 73-85 of Gedackt)
Gedackt 8', 4' 2' (85 pipes)
Mixture (II-IV) (232 pipes - some are stopped off with cotton)

Swell:

Rohrflute 8 (61 pipes)
Gamba 8 (61 pipes)
Celeste 8 (49 pipes)
Flute harmonique 4 (61 pipes)
Principle 2 (61 pipes)
Nasat 1 1/3 (61 pipes)
Sesquialtera II (98 pipes from tenor C)
Trumpet 8',4 (61 pipes- upper octave repeats)
Tremulant
All facade pipes are dummies

It is envisioned that St. Andrew's will someday have a complete organ without so many borrowed sounds and with greater tonal resources to support both liturgical and recital venues. An updated condole, at least one additional manual division, and tonal resources in the front of the sanctuary would better support congregational singing and accompany cantors without distracting sound delays.  The St. Andrew's organ is maintained by R.L. Victorine and Sons of Roanoke, VA.
